Part 3

I only expect of those who do not know, but not resign in not-knowing; that they tirelessly for the truth and put their lives more in the fight than in victory.

Most part of my work has always been to worry about my fellow citizens, to stir up the ground of their hearts, to frighten them, if I can.
el prójimo = the next, neighbour, fellow
remover = to stir up
el poso = grounds
angustiar = to frighten

I said so already in my book of Don Quijote and Sancho, this is my most extensive confession in this respect.

May they search, as I search; may they fight, like I fight, and all together we will pull out a hair of secrets off God, and at least the fight will make us more human, more spiritual persons.

arrancar
= to pull out

For this task - a religious task - I have seemed to be needed, in peoples like these peoples of Spanish language, rotten of laziness and spiritual superficiality, lulled by the routine of Catholic dogmatism and the dogmatism of the liberals, I necessarily appeared to be shameless or indecent some times, and others hard and aggressive and not seldem confused and paradox.

carcomido
= rotten
adormecido
= perfect participle of adormecer
adormecer, adormecerse
= to lull, to fall asleep

In our simple-minded literature hardly anyone cries out from the bottom of his heart, composure lost, yelling.

menguado = simple-minded
gritar = to cry out, to shout
descomponerse
= to lose composure
clamar = to yell

El grito era casi desconocido. Los escritores temían ponerse en ridículo.
This yell was almost unknown. The writers were afraid of being ridiculous.

desconocido
= unknown

To them happened and happens the same like to those ones, that stand the offences because of fear to be ridiculous, to see themselves with their hat on the floor getting arrested.

Yo, no; cuando he sentido ganas de gritar, he gritado. Jamás me ha detenido el decoro.
Not me; If I have felt like yelling, I have yelled. Shame has never held me back.

detenerse = to hold back

And this is one of the things, that my writer-colleagues forgive me the least, so decent, so correct, so disciplined until call for incorrectness and indiscipline.

comedido
= decent, polite

The literary anarchists take care of other things, the stylistics of the syntaxis. And when they get upset, they do it with good style; their disharmonies are harmonic.

desentonar
= to get upset

Cuando he sentido un dolor, he gritado, y he gritado en público.
When I have felt a pain, I have shouted, and I have shouted in public.

el dolor
= pain

The psalms, that are to be found below my poems, are nothing more than cries of the heart, with which I wanted to get the hurting strings of the hearts of others to vibrate.

doloroso = hurting

Whether they have these strings, or if they are this hard, that they do not vibrate, my cry will not sound in them, and they will declare that this is not poetry, and they will examine them acustically.

resonar
= to sound

Also can be studied acustically the cry of a man, who sees his son suddenly dying, and the one, who does not have a heart nor sons, it stays like this.

de repente
= suddenly

These psalms of my poetry, that are to be found with other compositions, are my religion, my sung religion and not present logical or reasoning.

expuesto = perfect participle of exponer
exponer = to present

And I sing it, better or worse, with the voice and the ear that God has given me, because I cannot reason it.

cantar = to sing
razonar = to reason

And the one, who sees more thoughts and logic, and method and exegesis in my verses, more than life, because they do not have fauns, nymphs, will-o'-wisps, water-lilies, Absinth (or be it Vermouth) or other more or less modernistic nonsense, may stay where he is, because I will not touch his heart, not with a violon nor with a hammer.

la exegesis
= exegesis (interpretion of texts)
el Fauno
= Faun, Satyr (greek ,mythology: man with goat's legs)
la nenúfar
= water-lily

That, what I escape from, I repeat, like from the plague, is that they classify me, and when I die, I want to hear that those spiritual lay-abouts stop and ask: And this man, what kind of person was he?

huir
= to escape
repetir
= to repeat

The liberals and the progressives will think me a reactionary or a mysticist, without actually knowing, what it means; and the conservatives and stupid reactionary we think me as an spiritual anarchist, and some and other for a poor guy, who tries to be special, and to be called original and whose head is a pot filled with crickets.

afanoso
= trying

But nobody should care about, what stupid ones say, be it progressives or conservatives, liberals or reactionaries.

cuidarse de algo
= to care about something

And because man is pigheaded and does usually not want to be taught and and is acostumed to return to the beginning after four hours of serman, these question-makers, when reading this, will ask again: Well, but, what is your solution?

terco
= pigheaded
acostumbrarse
= to get acostumed

And I, to conclude, will tell them to go to the shop opposite of mine, if they want solutions, because there is no article like that in mine.

acudir
= to go
de enfrente
= opposite

My effort has been, is and will be, that those, who read me, think and meditate about the fundamental things, and never has been to give them ready-made thoughts.

el empeño
= effort

I have always tried to agitate, and, to be more precise to suggest, more than to instruct. If I sell bread, it is not bread, but yeast.

sugerir
= sugerieren
instruier
= belehren

There are friends, and good friends, who advise me to leave this work and turn to an objective work, something, as they say, definite, something constructive, something steady. They want to say, something dogmatic.

aconsejar
= to advise

I declare, that I'm not capable of this and reclaim my freedom, my holy liberty, and if the day comes, the freedom to contradict myself.

incapaz = not capable
reclamar = to reclaim, to demand

I don't know, if anything of this, what I still will do will stay for years of centuries after I die; But I know, that if you hit the sea without coast, the waves will go on forever, even though weaker and weaker.

el siglo = century
suceder
= to follow
lo sucesivo
= the following

To agitate is something. If due to this agitaion comes something new, that lasts, in this my work will continue. This work of supreme compassion to wake the sleeping and to stir the lazy, and it is a work of supreme piety to search for the truth in everything and to find whereever pain, voidness and incompetence.

merced a
= thanks to, due to
durar
= to last
duradero
= lasting

Now my good friend the Chile knows, what to answer those, who ask, what is my religion.

contestar
= to answer

One thing: If it is one of these fools, who think that I guard resentment against a people or a country, only because I told one of those not reflecting sons some truthes, best one can do is not to answer.

la ojeriza
= resentment
