Chapter 15: Relative clauses

15.3 Relative pronouns referring to a larger context

  Compare the two sentences
The dog that barks on the street.
The war broke out which made it impossible to leave the country.

In the first sentence reference is made to one element - the dog. The second sentence has a reference to a larger context - the war broke out. In English those references are made with what. In Spanish it is similarly simple - it's lo que / lo cual.
