  17.4 convertirse en

The Spanish verb convertirse means in direct translation to convert oneself, better is to translate with to turn into or to become. can only be used with nouns. It can only be used with persons if the change described does not indicate a change of the state of mind (as volverse) but something more exterior. Convertirse can also be aiming at a change of a thing, the change is not necessarily something very sudden.

  Example convertirse en = turns into, converts oneself into
Ha puesto el jarro en el refrigerador a fin de que el agua se convierta en hielo.
= He has put the jar into the fridge that the water turns (in)to ice.
A los 30 días de nacida la larva forma un capullo y se convierte en pupa.
= 30 days after the birth the larva forms a cocoon and turns into a pupa.
Cuando la amistad virtual se convierte en real hay que tener cuidado.
= When the virtual friendship turns into a real one you have to be careful.
Hace diez años este edificio era un monasterio, pero ahora se convirtió en un hotel.
= Ten years ago, this building was a monastery, now it is a hotel. (it is converted into a hotel)
El estrés se convierte en uno de los nuevos retos para la salud laboral.
= Stress turns into a threat to the health at work.

= Spain turns into a tax paradise for multinational groups of the US.

= Tahmineh Bolandraftar turned into the first woman of the country who took the office of a mayor.
Se convirtió en una persona famosa.
= He became a famous person.
El cuerpo se convierte en arma cuando le pones un uniforme y sobre todo unas botas militares.
= The body turns into a weapon if you put on an uniform and above all military boots.
La Federación de Rusia se ha convertido en un estado democrático.
= The Russian Federation has turned into a democratic state.
