17.8 Focussing on change or result?

Is the focus on the result of a change or of a process the construction is to be made with quedarse.

Ella se quedó triste y enojada por la actitud del perro, pensó que era un malagradecido.
= She got sad and angry by the behaviour of the dog, thought he was ungrateful.

Por no poder ir a la piscina se quedó triste.
= He got sad that he could not go to the swimming pool.
Después les dieron sus alimentos y finalmente quedaron cansados y se durmieron.
= Then they gave her food and finally they got tired and fell asleep.
Esto lo dijo tiernamente, con que don Nuño quedó alegre.
= She said it very tenderly which made Don Nuño happy.
Rubén Guevara se quedó satisfecho del rendimiento de su equipo.
= Rubén Guevara was satisfied by the performance of his team.

Se quedó contento con el material que encontró.
= He got (was) satisfied with the material he found.
No dijo nada y se quedó contento y feliz.
= He didn't say anything and got (was) content and happy.
El hijo se fue a su habitación y el hombre se quedó enojado por la pregunta.
= The son went into his room and the man (got) was angry by the question.


Often it is not quite easy to decide whether the focus is on the result or on the change. Here are some examples taken from Google.

All of the sentences emphasised the process of becoming blind and therefore it is put with volverse.

  focus on the result

Ramón Casares se quedó ciego cuando tenía nueve años por una enfermedad en el nervio óptico.

= Ramón Casares got blind age nine due to an illness of the seeing nerve.

No se mató, pero las espinas le arañaron los ojos y se quedó ciego.
= He did not die, but the thorns scratched his eyes and he got blind.

Antes de la publicación de esta obra, Galileo se quedó ciego y murió el 8 de enero de 1642 en Arcetri, cerca de Florencia.

= Before the publication of this work Galileo got blind and died on January 8, 1642 in Arcetri near Florence.


Again we can see, the focus is on the result the sentence is constructed with quedarse.
