Chapter 20: Modal verbs (Auxiliaries)

  20.14 basta que .. (it's enough that)

  Example

He only needs to say so and I'll do it.
We only have to go there and we'll know.
You only need to change the socket that it will work fine.

The meaning of need to or to have to is here changed to it is enough to...And since the Spanish does not have to need as a modal verb it is exactly what's done. Note that then the subjuntivo is used!

  Enough = basta

Basta que lo diga y lo hacemos.
= It is enough that he says so and we'll do it.
Basta que vayamos, y lo vamos a saber.
= It is enough that we go there and we'll know.
Basta que cambiés el enchufe para que funcione.
= It enough that you change the socket that it will work fine.

Admittedly the construction It's enough is not really beautiful but the meaning is clear.
