Salían a conversación todos los amigos que se hallaban ausentes por voluntad o por fuerza; el tío Tripa, que había muerto hecho un santo después de una vida de trueno; los Donsainers, huidos a Buenos Aires por unos golpes tan mal dados, que el asunto no se pudo arreglar ni aun mediando el mismo gobernador de la provincia; y la gente de menor cuantía que estaba en San Agustín o San Miguel de los Reyes, inocentones que se echaron a valientes, sin contra antes con buenos protectores.

¡Cristo! Que era una lástima que hombres de tanto mérito hubieran muerto o se hallaran pudriendo en la cárcel o en el extranjero. Aquéllos eran valientes de verdad, no los de ahora, que son en su mayoría unos muertos de hambre, a quienes la miseria obliga a echárselas de guapo a falta de valor para pegarse un tiro.
